A Chance Encounter

by Ron Bateman

A nice dinner out after class turned out to be an incredible stroke of good fortune for a group of students and faculty in COML 513 – Peacebuilding Through Dialogue. After a wonderful meal, the class had the opportunity to briefly meet and visit with 1998 Nobel Peace Prize winner, John Hume.

Hume, a founding member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party, has been active in forwarding peace in Northern Ireland for decades. Many have credited his work as vital to the 1998 Good Friday Agreements.

Included is a picture of the group with Mr. Hume at The Exchange in Derry, Northern Ireland.
